Welcome to the First Cohort of Our RTG!

We are delighted to welcome the first cohort of doctoral researchers to the DFG Research Training Group Multiscale Imaging and Analytics of Interfaces in Musculoskeletal Health.

June 1, 2026 marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for our interdisciplinary training program. Following a highly competitive international recruitment process, the cohort brings together talented early-career scientists from diverse academic backgrounds, including biomedical engineering, biology, imaging sciences, and data science.

Over the next four years, the doctoral researchers will work closely with interdisciplinary Supervisor Committees and collaborate across UKE, TUHH, DESY, and Hereon. Their projects will explore musculoskeletal interfaces across scales using advanced imaging technologies, biomechanics, computational analytics, and translational research approaches.

We look forward to supporting their scientific and professional development through our structured qualification program, shared infrastructure, and vibrant interdisciplinary research environment.

We warmly welcome the new doctoral researchers to the RTG and to Hamburg and wish them a successful, inspiring, and rewarding doctoral journey.

RTG Recruitment Day Brings Together Outstanding International Applicants

On April 18, 2026, the RTG Multiscale Imaging and Analytics of Interfaces in Musculoskeletal Health welcomed prospective doctoral researchers to its Recruitment Day at the UKE Campus Butenfeld.

Twenty shortlisted applicants presented their scientific backgrounds and research interests through posters, presentations, and discussions with the RTG faculty. While many candidates joined us in person, several international applicants participated online, reflecting the strong international interest in the program.

The event provided a great opportunity for scientific exchange and for candidates to meet potential supervisors and future colleagues. We were impressed by the high scientific quality, motivation, and diversity of the applicants and thank all participants for contributing to a successful and inspiring Recruitment Day.

Research Visit by Elizabeth Zimmermann from McGill University

We were delighted to welcome Dr. Elizabeth Zimmermann, Assistant Professor at McGill University’s Faculty of Dental Medicine and Oral Health Sciences and Associate Member of Biomedical Engineering, for a recent research visit to our group.

Dr. Zimmermann’s work focuses on the structure–function relationships in mineralized tissues such as bone, exploring how hierarchical architectures contribute to mechanical resilience and how aging, disease, and treatments affect these properties. During her stay, she shared insights from her studies combining advanced imaging, materials characterization, and biomechanics.

Her visit sparked stimulating discussions and opened avenues for future collaboration, particularly at the interface of materials science, biomechanics, and biomedical imaging. We thank Dr. Zimmermann for her inspiring contributions and look forward to continued exchange.

Review Life Science Student Conference Hamburg 2025

The 2025 Life Science Student Conference Hamburg event was a great success! Young researchers presented their exciting projects in the area of life sciences – from microorganisms to medical technology, from basic research to AI applications. The atmosphere was lively and inspiring, with engaging talks, diverse contributions, great discussions, and well-deserved awards for the best talks and poster. Check out the photo gallery for highlights from the day on www.studierendentagung-hamburg.de.

Several students from our groups presented their work and were awarded for their scientific presentations!

Big congrats to Xenia Junimann who received the 1st prize for her oral presentation on finite element-based analysis of the mechanical role of microcalli in trabecular bone, Leona Schild who won 3rd prize with her work on optimizing image-based pose estimation of surgical instruments using deep learning, and Felice Kendziorra for winning the 3rd prize in the short oral presentations on 3D imaging and segmentation of the osteocyte network in zebrafish.

We're looking forward to contributing to this great conference again next year!
